The God question

Why Minds Build Gods

The machinery that generates belief works whether or not a god exists. That is the problem.

The point in one sentence

Cognitive science can now explain how human minds generate gods, from agency detection to teleology to transmission through children's trust in parents, and the explanation runs identically whether or not any god is real, which quietly removes belief itself from the evidence column.

The machinery

None of this is fringe; it is the mainstream cognitive science of religion. SEP survey

The argument, and its exact limit

The debunking move: if the process that produces god-beliefs is insensitive to whether gods exist, then having the belief is not evidence for its content. The argument structure

Concede the limit before they raise it. Explaining a belief's origin does not make the belief false; that would be the genetic fallacy. Evolution also built the faculties we use for arithmetic, and arithmetic is fine. The philosopher Lauri Launonen has argued in detail that cognitive science alone debunks less than skeptics hope. The strongest pushback And Plantinga runs the same weapon in reverse: if evolution aims at survival rather than truth, why trust any of your faculties, including the ones doing the debunking? Name that symmetry yourself; it is the honest thing, and it defuses the ambush.

The difference that survives the concession: arithmetic and perception get checked against the world constantly, planes fly, bridges hold, predictions land. The god-generating faculties produce thousands of mutually contradictory outputs with no external check that has ever distinguished one from another. Calibration is what separates a trustworthy faculty from a generative one, and calibration is exactly what religious cognition has never demonstrated.

Why this should make you question

For most believers, the real evidence was never an argument; it was the sheer naturalness of the belief, the way it feels less like a conclusion and more like a perception. Cognitive science explains that naturalness completely, for every religion at once, including the false ones by anyone's count. What remains is whatever checkable evidence a specific tradition can produce, which is the business of the rest of this site.
