Flat Earth

The purest lab specimen: a belief with zero evidence, held socially, by people who are not stupid.

Why this page exists

Not because flat earthers are common, they are not, but because flat earth is the cleanest possible specimen of how belief communities actually work. The physical claim is maximally checkable and maximally false, so everything holding the belief up is visible: and what is holding it up is trust allocation, not evidence. Researchers who attended the Flat Earth International Conference found members reasoning carefully and sincerely from one prior decision: mainstream institutions lie, and my community tells the truth. The famous own-goal

The documentary Behind the Curve recorded flat earthers running two honest experiments: a $20,000 laser gyroscope, which measured exactly the 15-degrees-per-hour rotation a spinning globe predicts, and a light-through-holes experiment whose result matched a curved earth. Both times, the experimenters, to their credit, ran real tests, and both times the community reinterpreted the result rather than update. One participant said it out loud: "we don't want to blow this, you know? When you've got $20,000 in this gyro."

That sentence contains this entire section of the site: the test was honest, the result was clear, and the sunk cost and the community did the rest.

Concede these first

• They are not stupid. Studies of the community consistently find ordinary reasoning ability applied downstream of a broken trust decision. Mocking them misreads the mechanism and teaches you nothing.
• The instinct they start from is half right. Institutions do sometimes lie; several examples appear on this site. The failure is not distrust, it is transferring total trust to a smaller, warmer, less accountable authority, the community itself.
• It is an extreme case. Using it to smear every unorthodox belief would be a strawman. Its value is as a microscope, because the ordinary processes are so exposed.

The checklist it gives you

Every load-bearing feature of flat earth belief is a general-purpose pattern: evidence against the belief reframed as evidence of the conspiracy's reach; the community as the only trusted source; costly public commitment making exit humiliating; personal experiments abandoned when they return the wrong answer; and the warm feeling of being among the few who see. None of those five is about astronomy. Any belief of yours that scores five for five deserves a hard look, whatever its subject.

Why this should make you question

From outside, it is obvious that no measurement will ever end flat earth belief, because measurements were never its foundation; belonging was. The uncomfortable exercise, and the whole point of this site's final section, is to run the same diagnosis on the beliefs you hold from the inside, where it is never obvious.
