What the largest study actually found, versus what the bestsellers say it found.

The point in one sentence

The largest controlled study of near-death experiences found that vivid experiences during resuscitation are real and fairly common, and that independently verified perception while clinically dead is almost nonexistent, and the entire popular case lives in the gap between those two findings.

The AWARE study

Sam Parnia's AWARE study (2014) tracked 2,060 cardiac arrests across 15 hospitals, the first serious attempt to test out-of-body claims with hidden visual targets placed on high shelves, visible only from the ceiling. The paper and the university's summary

Never present the 39 percent as verified out-of-body perception; the study itself separates subjective recall (common) from verified perception (rare), and conflating them is the single most frequent misuse of this research.

Concede this first

One case in AWARE is genuinely puzzling and should not be waved away: a 57-year-old man accurately described sounds and events from a window of resuscitation during which brain activity ordinarily cannot support experience, and his account checked out against the record. It is a single unreplicated case, it occurred where no hidden target was in view, and it remains the best card the survivalist side holds. Say all three things.

Concede also that NDEs are profound, life-changing, and cross-cultural. Nobody is faking the experience. The question is what the experience is evidence of.

The alternative explanation carries the data

Experiences with the same features, the tunnel, the light, the presence, the life review, the bliss, occur under ketamine, in temporal lobe stimulation, in fighter pilots during G-force blackout, and in people who merely believed they were dying but were never physiologically close. The content also tracks culture: the beings encountered match the experiencer's tradition. A dying brain under oxygen deprivation and massive neurochemical release, interpreting the event through whatever it already believes, predicts everything in the dataset including the zero hidden-target hits. Why this should make you question

This is the pattern from the moon landing page applied to the afterlife: when a claim was finally tested in a way that could distinguish the two explanations, hidden targets no living patient could see, the supernatural reading went 0 for 2,060. The experiences are real. The evidence they were ever outside the skull has not survived its first controlled test.
