Who Wrote the Torah
Moses narrates his own death, and the flood has two animal counts two verses apart.
The point in one sentence
Moses did not write the first five books of the Bible, and the clearest evidence is inside the books themselves.
The evidence, straight from the text
- Moses narrates his own death and burial, and adds that "no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day," a phrase written by someone looking back from much later. Deuteronomy 34
- Genesis 36:31 lists "the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any king over the children of Israel." That sentence only makes sense written by someone already living under Israelite kings, centuries after Moses.
- Two creation accounts in different orders. Genesis 1: plants day 3, sea and air animals day 5, land animals and humans together day 6. Genesis 2: man first, then plants, then animals formed and brought to him. Genesis 1 and Genesis 2
- The flood contradicts itself within one chapter. Genesis 6:19-20: bring "two of every sort" of every living thing. Genesis 7:2-3: "Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens... and of beasts that are not clean by two."
- This is not a modern skeptical invention. "The Mosaic authorship of the Torah had been largely rejected by leading scholars by the 17th century."
Two flood instructions, seventeen verses apart
Same story, same voice, same command, different numbers.
- "two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female"
- Two of everything. No distinction between clean and unclean.
- "Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two"
- Sevens of the clean ones. The distinction now exists.

Moses narrates his own death, his own burial, and adds that no man knows where the grave is "unto this day."
A phrase written by someone looking back from long enough afterward that the location had been forgotten.
The common rebuttals
"Joshua added the part about Moses's death." The classical answer, found as far back as the Talmud, and internally consistent. But look at what it concedes: part of the Torah was written by someone else. Once you allow that, the question is not whether the text has later hands in it, only how many.
"Genesis 2 is a zoomed-in retelling of day six." The most reasonable harmonization. The trouble is that Genesis 2's own internal sequence still runs man, then plants springing up, then animals, which is a different order even on that reading. And it uses a different name for God. Those are exactly the seams that made scholars suspect two sources.
"The Documentary Hypothesis is in decline." Partly true. The classic four-source model has been heavily revised since the 1970s. But the thing it was invented to explain has not gone away, and single Mosaic authorship is not the mainstream academic position outside conservative religious institutions.
Why this should make you question
The traditional framing treats the Pentateuch as firsthand revelation delivered to one prophet. If it is instead a composite document edited together over centuries, the chain of authority most believers imagine has a different shape than they were taught. And the evidence is not hidden in a university archive. It is in Genesis 7, two verses after Genesis 6.
