Building 7’s 2.25 seconds of free fall is real, and NIST says so. The question is what explains it.
The strategy
The free-fall claim about Building 7 is the strongest-sounding argument, and it deserves a real answer, not a brush-off. Concede the fact first, then give the mechanism.
The steel question
The most common claim is "jet fuel can't melt steel beams." It is true, and it is irrelevant, because nothing had to melt.
Nothing needed to melt
NIST: "In no instance did NIST report that steel in the WTC towers melted due to the fires." Softening was enough.
Source: NIST WTC Towers FAQ
The Twin Towers did not fall at free-fall speed. WTC 1 took about 11 seconds, WTC 2 about 9, both measurably slower than free fall. The free-fall argument applies to Building 7 only. Knowing that distinction shows you have read the material.
Building 7, honestly
Concede the fact. NIST itself identifies a period of genuine free-fall acceleration lasting about 2.25 seconds. Anyone who denies this has not read the report.
Then give NIST's actual mechanism. Uncontrolled office fires made steel floor beams expand until a girder on Floor 13 was pushed off its seat at Column 79, an interior column. Column 79 buckled, triggering a cascade of floor failures down to the fifth floor, leaving it unsupported over nine stories. During that 2.25-second window the north face columns were buckling near-simultaneously across multiple floors rather than being caught floor by floor. NIST's position is not "there was no free fall." It is "here is the specific structural mechanism that produces free fall without explosives." NIST WTC 7 FAQ
Why not explosives
NIST investigated it directly and gave a checkable reason: the smallest blast capable of failing the critical column would have produced 130 to 140 decibels at half a mile, jet-engine loud, across lower Manhattan, on the most heavily documented day in media history. It was not heard. Preparing the building would also have required stripping and replacing fireproofing and column enclosures across the structure without anyone noticing.
The 2009 Harrit/Jones paper appeared in a journal whose editor-in-chief resigned after publication, saying it ran without her authorization. An independent materials scientist, James Millette, re-examined the red-gray chips and found them consistent with primer paint. But NIST says plainly it did not test the steel for explosive residue, so NIST's answer is a feasibility argument, not a chemical test. Do not claim NIST tested for residue. The rebuttal to the paper is Millette's independent analysis.
The Pentagon
Multiple independent eyewitnesses including an air traffic controller; recovered nose cone, landing gear, and an intact cockpit seat; both flight recorders found roughly 300 feet in, the flight data recorder fully readable; and the Armed Forces Medical Examiner identified 184 of the 189 dead. Concede these
- The government lied about the Gulf of Tonkin to escalate a war. Distrust is earned.
- The 9/11 Commission had real limitations, and the 28 redacted pages on Saudi links were classified for years, which was itself a genuine scandal.
- Some official communication that day was confused and contradictory, because it was chaos.
The scale problem
To rig three buildings: physical access to strip and replace fireproofing around hundreds of columns over weeks, explosives loud enough to be heard half a mile away, and permanent silence from every demolition crew, engineer, and security guard involved. Twenty-plus years. No documents, no payments traced, no deathbed confession. Grimes, PLOS ONE, on why big conspiracies leak
There are real, documented, unresolved questions about that day: the Saudi connections, the intelligence failures, the war in Iraq that had nothing to do with it. Controlled demolition is not one of them, and pursuing it is what lets people wave off the ones that are.
