The Resurrection

He existed. He was crucified. Everything after that is where it gets hard.

What is not in dispute

Jesus existed. Bart Ehrman, an agnostic, wrote a book refuting the claim that he did not. "Whether we like it or not, Jesus certainly existed."
He was crucified under Pontius Pilate. "One of the most secure facts we have about his life."
His followers sincerely came to believe he had risen, very early, and that belief transformed a failed movement into a world religion.

One claim to leave alone

Jesus mythicism, the claim that he never existed, is a fringe position rejected by essentially every professional historian including atheist ones. It is also the fastest way to make every other page here look unserious, which is why it is not used anywhere on this site.

The one thing that does not follow

Historians establish what probably happened using natural analogies. A unique, unrepeated suspension of the laws of nature is by definition not something historical method can certify.

Ehrman puts it precisely, and note that it cuts both ways: "Historians have no way of confirming or disconfirming it (let me stress: history cannot show that it didn't happen any more than it can show that it did!)."

So when someone says the resurrection is the best-attested event in ancient history, the honest answer is that the belief in it is well attested.

Why "minimal facts" overstates the consensus

The survey pool skews heavily toward seminary and clergy-affiliated scholars rather than a representative cross-section.
It equivocates on "appearances." Most scholars granting post-mortem appearances mean visionary or subjective experiences, not a physical body eating fish. Those are very different claims. A detailed critique of the methodology

The detail almost nobody knows

The earliest source, the creed Paul quotes in 1 Corinthians 15:3-8, dated to within a few years of the crucifixion, lists appearances with no physical detail at all. No empty tomb. No women.

The tactile details, eating fish and Thomas putting hands in wounds, appear only in the later gospels, 40 to 70 years out.

Standard critical dating. Each stage adds physical detail the stage before it did not have.

c. AD 30

The crucifixion.

The creed Paul later quotes in 1 Corinthians 15: a list of appearances with no empty tomb, no women, and no physical detail at all.

c. AD 50s

Paul writes it down. Still no tomb, still no physical description.

c. AD 70

Mark, the earliest gospel, ends at the empty tomb. The oldest manuscripts have no appearances at all.

c. AD 80-90

Matthew and Luke add appearances. Luke adds a body that eats broiled fish.

c. AD 90-100

John adds Thomas putting his hands into the wounds.

That is the shape of legendary development, and it is visible inside the New Testament itself.

The earliest source is the thinnest. The physical proof arrives last, sixty years out, from the furthest witness.

Hume's razor

"That no testimony is sufficient to establish a miracle, unless the testimony be of such a kind, that its falsehood would be more miraculous, than the fact, which it endeavours to establish." Read Hume in full

Say the symmetry out loud: this is the exact standard Christians use to reject the Book of Mormon witnesses and every other faith's miracles. The argument is not special pleading against Christianity. It is the refusal to exempt it.

The common rebuttals

"The disciples died for what they saw." Correct, and it rules out conspiracy. It does not rule out sincere mistake. People have died for beliefs in every religion, including ones Christians consider false.

"Why invent women as the first witnesses?" This is a genuinely good argument and worth conceding. It suggests the tomb tradition was not fabricated wholesale. It does not establish that a body was raised.
